Nancy Brower Sheppard Dies, Three Others Hurt as Cars Collide Head On

A head-on collision on Coast Highway late last night took the life of one woman and injured three men, two seriously.

Pronounced dead on-arrival at Huntington Beach Hospital was Mrs Nancy Brower Sheppard, 23, of 541 South El Molino Avenue, Pasadena, daughter of Horace Brower, president of the Occidental Life Insurance Company of California.

Her husband, James Carroll Sheppard III, 24, was one of two injured treated at Hoag Presbyterian Hospital, Huntington Beach. Also treated there was a man identified by Huntington Beach police as Dr I.A. DuMouchel, 47, of 148 Barcelona Avenue, San Clemente, a dentist. Hospital authorities said the condition of both was good.

According to police, the accident occurred when DuMouchel's automobile collided head on with that driven by Sheppard on the Coast Highway 1 1/2 miles east of Highway 39, between Huntington Beach and Newport Beach.

A third motorist, Fred Hortop, 40, of 12331 Guiss Avenue, Downey, suffered slight injuries when he crashed into the wreckage of the other two cars. Police said he was treated by a Huntington Beach physician, then released.

Traffic along the highway was blocked until crews could clear away the wreckage.

According to papers found on her person, Mrs Sheppard would have been 24 tomorrow. A graduate of Stanford, she was married to Sheppard March 28, 1951, while both were seniors at the university. Her husband is a mechanical engineer.
