Christopher Douglas Carnes - Class Of 1960

Christopher Carnes, a flamenco guitarist who performed in Bay Area nightclubs and fiestas under the name of Cristobal Dos Santos, died July 25, 2000 of heart failure in a Eureka hospital.  Mr. Carnes, 57, was a resident of Eureka, California.

A native of Long Beach, Mr. Carnes studied in Spain with flamenco masters and performed for years in Seville.  He returned to the Bay Area in the 1980s and performed often in San Francisco and Berkeley.  He was host of a program of flamenco music on a Mendocino radio station, and he recorded two albums.

He is survived by his daughter, Carmen Carnes, of Fairfax; his parents John (SPHS '37) and Dayle Gerstenkorn Carnes (SPHS '36), of San Luis Obispo; his sister Claudia Carnes Barnes and brother Kent Carnes.

Chris became a world famous Flamenco guitarist.  He lived in Spain for 20 years and studied Flamenco with the best teachers.  He played a concert in Spain for the Spanish government which was a great honor.

He had four heart surgeries in his life and endured a lot but he accomplished great things.
