Thomas Reid Tom Mitchell

The Honorable Thomas Reid Mitchell of La Jolla passed away June 14, 2007, surrounded by his loving family. Judge Mitchell was born in Los Angeles June 17, 1933. He graduated from South Pasadena-San Marino High School, attended Stanford University for seven years, and received his law degree from Stanford in 1959.

After moving to San Diego, Judge Mitchell practiced law for over 30 years, beginning with James Hervey and later as managing partner of Mitchell, Ashworth, Keeney, Barry & Pike. In 1992, Tom was appointed by then-Governor Pete Wilson to the Superior Court of San Diego, where he served 11 rewarding years, eight of them as judge of the Probate Court. Following his retirement from the bench, Judge Mitchell continued to pursue his work as a mediator with JAMS. Survivors are his loving wife of 40 years, Mary (Mickey) Mitchell; four children including Clayton Mitchell of Piedmont, Robert Mitchell of Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Marcia Mitchell of San Diego, Elizabeth (Tye) Mitchell Barber of San Diego; and six wonderful grandchildren.
