Robert Alan 'Bob' Griffin - Class Of 1972

August 2008 - From a recent conversation with Bobby's brother Jim Griffin:  My older brother Bob was tragically killed in a light plane crash in March 1973. At the time of his death, Bob was a Freshman at UCSB, and he was flying with his roommate at UCSB, the pilot of the 2 Seater Cessna 150 that went down in the mountains near the Grapevine in Newhall, CA, just off HWY 14. Bob's roommate, Mike Hillbloom from Hillsborough, CA, was also killed in the crash.
Bob was 19 at the time of his death. In his memory, my Father published 5,000 books that showcased Bob's Photography, Art, and poems.
The Robert Griffin Memorial Art Scholarship was established in the same year of his death at SPHS.

"Jb" James Griffin (1973)

Bob was my older Brother. While at UC Santa Barbara in his Freshman Year 1973 ( majoring in Art) Bob was killed in a small plane crash on a flight from Santa Barbara to Burbank. The plane was discovered in Newhall, CA the next day after disappearing the night before in a mountainous area. Bob and his roomate Mike Hillbloom from Hillsborough, CA were both 19 at the time of their untimely deaths. In Bob's memory an Art Scholarship was set up in his name at SPHS. Although the scholarship is no longer awarded, it is my hope to bring the scholarship back to be awarded to a deserving art student at SPHS. Bob's memory and inspiration he left with us has lived on forever in our hearts.
