Ensign, US Navy

MIA

The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Ensign Robert Lewis Browne (NSN:  0-355075), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while participating in an aerial flight of a carrier-based dive bomber in Bombing Squadron TEN (VB-10), in the air attack on 7 April 1945 against major units of the Japanese Fleet in the East China Sea, including a battleship, cruisers, and destroyers. In spite of extremely adverse weather conditions and in the face of intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire which damaged several planes, he coolly and deliberately pressed home his attack against the Japanese battleship. His accurate bombing contributed materially to the sinking of that vessel immediately after the attack. His courage and skill were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
