Virginia Iliff Dean (Arthur) - Class Of 1937

Virginia Iliff Dean (Arthur)

Virginia Dean Arthur passed away peacefully in her sleep in her Monarch Beach home January 6, 2010.  A third generation native Californian, Ginny was born on May 10, 1920 in Nuevo, California, the second daughter of Argus and Alma Dean.

Ginny attended South Pasadena High School and Stanford University.  At Stanford she was an active Pi Beta Phi, and achieved academic distinction as an elected member of Phi Beta Kappa and through membership in Cap and Gown, one of Stanford's oldest organizations for women.  After graduation, Ginny met her future husband, Charles E. Arthur, through mutual friends, and they were married on December 21, 1944.

After the war, Ginny and Chuck settled in San Marino where they raised their three children.  Always an enthusiastic and interested participant in everything she did, she was the consummate wife and mother for her immediate and extended family.  Along with her mother, Ginny was also active in P.E.O. throughout most of her life.  After Chuck's retirement they moved to Monarch Beach, which provided a genial meeting point for all their children and grandchildren in the years to come.

Ginny Arthur was a very special person.  Her consistent style, grace, and unwavering interest in all things and in every person she met served her well throughout her life, and made her a role model to members of her family along with the hundreds of friends she made over the years.  She was the motivating force for so many people, an inspiration for others to follow her example of daily exercise and healthy living.  Becoming a grandmother at age 61, she became "Grandma Ginny" or Gigi, to her grandkids and extended family.  Her enthusiam to explore the world is one of the precious gifts she shared with her grandchildren.  Ginny spent many summers as a girl growing up at the family cabins in Big Bear Lake, and she raised her own children the same way.  Those cabins remain as her family's legacy.

Ginny was preceded in death by Chuck Arthur, husband of 55 years.  Ginny has left behind a family of three children: Bill Arthur of Salt Lake City, Utah, Drusilla MacDonald of Durango, Colorado, Tom Arthur of San Elijo Hills, California; five grandchildren and many other family members and friends who will dearly miss her.
