Joseph M Jones - Class Of 1951

Joseph M Jones

Joseph Morse Jones (October 28, 1933 - July 30, 2011) was born in Pasadena, California.  He graduated from South Pasadena - San Marino High School; then he went to Stanford University, graduating in history in 1955 and law school in 1958.

After practicing Workmen's Compensation law, he became interested in psychology.  He took classes at UCLA to qualify for medical school, and graduated from UCLA Medical School in 1965.  He interned at Washington D.C. General Hospital, and completed a residency in psychiatry in 1969 at UCLA.  He married Sylvia Gressitt in 1968 in Honolulu, Hawaii.  After his residency, he was drafted into the army for two years, serving in Viet Nam.  In 1978 he completed analytic training at the L.A. Psychoanalytic Society and practiced psychoanalysis in West Los Angeles.

His legacy in the field of psychoanalysis includes the publication of a book in 1995, AFFECTS AS PROCESS, which is volume 14 in the Psychoanalytic Inquiry book series.  Another major accomplishment was shepherding the merger of the Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Society and Institution with the Southern California Psychoanalytic Society.  The merger was finally completed in 2005, the name now being the New Center for Psychoanalysis with Joe serving as its first president.  He gave time endlessly to his patients, trying to help them cope with life's calamities.

Joe is survived by his wife Sylvia, his two children, Allison (Doug Endo) and Andrew, his granddaughter Kaiya, and his sister, Judy Jones Altshuler (SPHS '54).

He enjoyed traveling, tennis, skiing, going to Stanford Camp (37 years!) near Lake Tahoe, and playing Bridge.  He will be sorely missed by us all.
