Raymond F 'Ray' Pentz - Class Of 1952

Raymond F 'Ray' Pentz

Ray Pentz

September 9, 1934 - July 7, 2021

Ray peacefully transitioned to his eternal life with the Lord with his loving and devoted wife Montel (Monty) by his side. He was 86. Ray was born in Los Angeles and attended Huntington Elementary School in San Marino and graduated from South Pasadena-San Marino High School in 1952, having played on the varsity tennis team. After graduation he attended Stanford University where he became a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity and lettered on the freshman and varsity tennis teams. After transferring to USC in 1954, Ray graduated in 1956 with a BA in History and was commissioned an Ensign in the United States Naval Reserve through USC's NROTC program. While serving in the Navy, he served on the Navy tennis team while stationed at the Recruit Training Command in San Diego. After serving in the Navy, Ray was admitted to Claremont Graduate School and earned an MA degree in Business Economics in 1960. After graduation, he continued his love for tennis by serving as president of the San Marino Tennis Foundation in 1972-1973 and competing in senior tennis tournaments throughout Southern California.

Ray's business career was spent mostly as an investment advisor beginning in 1968. He represented many nationally known investment counsel firms as an account manager and marketing executive helping to grow their business. In 1988 Ray formed his own company, RFP Consultants, Inc in Newport Beach to serve the investment community as an independent contractor. Ray retired from the business in 2012. Upon retirement, Ray continued to serve the community as a member of the Hoag Hospital Investment Board, the Board of Advisors for the Claremont Graduate University, the Harbor Area Youth Foundation Investment committee and Saint Michael's and All Angels Episcopal Parish in Corona del Mar.

Ray and Monty were married in January 1995. During their marriage, the couple enjoyed traveling and many adventures in life. They made frequent trips to the High Sierras in Northern California, where they participated in camping, hiking, and pack trips by horseback, into the majestic mountains. It was on one of those pack trips that Ray proposed to Monty over a can of Dinty Moore Beef Stew! Ray and Monty expanded their love for traveling to Hawaii, Belize, Turkey, a train excursion through Canada, and a Scandinavian cruise, just to name a few of their favorite destinations. Both were avid snow skiers and loved the slopes. They also enjoyed the local flair of excitement with friends where they attended horse racing at Del Mar. Ray and Monty also enjoyed 'home time' where Ray continued his reading of history and either attended USC football games or watched them on TV with Monty by his side.

Ray is survived by his wife Monty; son, John (Melinda) Pentz; daughter Julie (John) Patterson; two grandsons and a great-granddaughter. Ray was preceded in death by son Michael Pentz.
