Julia Anne Sampson (Hayward) - Class Of 1951

Julia Sampson Hayward passed away December 27, 2011 at her home in Newport Beach, California.  She was born February 2, 1934 in Los Angeles to Alberta and Ralph Sampson.  She grew up in San Marino and attended South Pasadena High School and went on to attend USC.

Julie was a world champion tennis player winning two Grand Slam titles (1953 Australian Doubles and Mixed), 21 National titles and a finalist in endless USTA and international tournaments including Wimbledon, the US Open and the French Open.

In 1958 Julie married Daniel Hayward.  Their early years were spent in Pasadena where the couple had three children.  Julie eventually moved down to Newport Beach where she raised her children as a single mom.  She enjoyed teaching locally and continued playing and winning national championships in adult USTA tournaments.  She loved her home, her dog, her gorgeous garden, her charity work for Meals-on-Wheels and her family and friends.  She was a sincere, humble, and loving woman.

Julie was predeceased by her parents and sister, Edith Sampson Wood (SPHS '50).  She is survived by her children, Wendy and son-in-law Brian Herbel; Mark; and Greg and daughter-in-law Madeline Hayward; as well as seven grandchildren, Shelby and Kelley Herbel; Kendall, Julia, and Ryan Hayward; and Maddie and Camille Hayward.
