In Memory

Sylvia Seidell (Bailes) - Class Of 1951

Sylvia Bailes, resident of Moraga, California, was born on February 16, 1934, to Howard and Mildred Seidell in San Marino, California. She is survived by the love of her life, Don, in a love story that began 60 years ago on a blind date while Sylvia was attending Stephens Women's College in Missouri. She is also survived by her daughters Pam Bailes and Teri Hildebrand; and grandchildren, Ben Hildebrand, Kimberly Amyouny, and Dianna Hildebrand.

Sylvia was a friendly and generous woman. It was not unusual for her to offer you one of the beautiful scarves she skillfully knitted should you remark that you liked the one she was wearing. She was a vibrant presence in her community, volunteering in many organizations. She was an active member of Linnets for 47 years in support of the Mt. Diablo Therapy Center. While not actively coaching, her contribution and time spent with Don while he coached the Orinda Track Club as well as high school track and field, will be long remembered. And while she loved her life, her children, and grandchildren, her many close friends in Moraga, the theater, and volunteering, her great passion was traveling the far reaches of the world with Don. Their adventures and the friends they made are amazing and countless.

Sylvia left us on November 26, 2013, after a short, fierce battle with cancer, surrounded by her family. We will miss her love, her quick wit and laughter, and the wisdom she brought to us all.

I  attended the wedding of Sylvia and Don.  They were good friends with me and my first wife and fellow classmate Shirley Gough.  We lost touch but, I never forgot the good times and the good conversation.  What a wonderful friend was Sylvia and, of course, Don.  My very best to Don and the family.
