Helen Jane Valk (Scott) - Class Of 1936

Helen Jane Valk (Scott)

After a lengthy and courageous battle with lung disease, Jane Scott, 95, passed away February 26, 2013.  Jane was born in South Pasadena, California to Eugene and Helen (Stokes) Valk on January 18, 1918.

In 1940, she graduated from Pomona College where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree.  She held a variety of different jobs so she could be at her husband's side during his stateside service in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.  She spoke often of their adventurous assignment at a Montana fire lookout tower through the summer of 1947 during her husband's early employment with the U.S. Forest Service.  Jane was also a homemaker and mother for their two children.  She and her husband ultimately retired to Shell Beach in 1975.

Jane loved to collect sea shells, grow flowers and spend time in their vacation home on Maui.  Her extensive collection of shells provided many with intrigue and countless hours of enjoyment and conversation.  Without any formal training in horticulture, Jane instinctively knew exactly what any flower needed to thrive, and they did so in her care.

The uncharacteristically slow progression of Jane's disease was due largely to the incredible daily care and devotion of her daughter, Sue, who loved and cherished her immensely. Jane is survived by her daughter, Susan Brading (Ken) of Atascadero; son, John Scott (Debbie); and granddaughter, Rachel Scott of Sacramento, California.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Lyle Scott in 1985.  Jane will be deeply missed.
