Mary Ellen Hardenbergh (Kilgore)

Surrounded by family and friends, Mary Ellen Kilgore passed away on September 23, 2016 in Mandeville, Louisiana having enjoyed a life of love and serving others. She is survived by her loving husband, Richard, two wonderful daughters, Carol of Atlanta and Karla of Mandeville, her sister, Carolyn Hardenbergh Otto (SPHS '60) of La Canada-Flintridge, California and her life-long other 'sister', Sally Going Westcott (SPHS '56) of Carlsbad, California.

Born in California in 1938, Mary Ellen was the daughter of the late Karl and Dorothy Hardenbergh. She was raised in South Pasadena and then attended Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. After marrying Dick, they lived in Mt Vernon, Washington, Montvale, New Jersey, and Nassau Bay, Texas before moving to Metairie, Louisiana. Upon his retiring in 1995, they moved to Mandeville.

Mary Ellen's days on earth were spent volunteering as a Girl Scout leader, teaching adults to read, knitting scarves for less fortunate and tirelessly working behind the scenes for others at St. Trinity United Methodist Church. Being a member of the choir was her passion; making 'a joyful noise to God' on Sunday was the highlight of her week. Mary Ellen's fondest wish was to leave the world a little better place. Please reach out to the less fortunate and brighten their days.
