Fred D Byers Jr

Frederic DeHaven Byers, Jr., passed away peacefully at The Mission Terrace Convalescent Home in Santa Barbara on Sunday, October 11, 2009.  Fred was born April 19, 1936 in Denver, Colorado to Fred and Louise Byers.  His family moved to San Marino, California in 1941.  After attending San Marino elementary schools and South Pasadena-San Marino High School, he obtained a degree in electrical engineering from Yale University in 1958.

Fred's career began as an engineer for the Hughes Aircraft Company in Culver City.  In the 1970s he became general manager of Defense Electronics Magazine in the Bay Area, the most widely read technical magazine in the U.S.

In retirement, Fred lived in Santa Rosa, California; Stuart, Florida; and Charlottesville, Virginia, before returning to Carpinteria, California in 2006.  Fred's interests included California history, sports, wine and food, Yosemite National Park, conservation, bridge, crosswords, and Egyptology.  He served as a docent at Filoli Gardens in Woodside and volunteered for "Meals on Wheels" in Charlottesville and Santa Barbara. 

He is survived by his sister, Virginia B. Urschel; his uncle, Walter W. Phelps; cousins Louise Dunn, David Kendall, and other family members.
