C Marshall Payne

Long time Dana Point resident Charles Marshall Payne, 79, died at his home on Pequito Drive, May 24, 2016. Marshall first established Dana Point residency in 1976, living on a sail boat in the marina. He then moved to Pequito Drive in 1978 where he soon became the unofficial 'Mayor of Pequito Drive.'

He was born April 28, 1937 in South Pasadena, the son of Charles and Helen Payne. A 1955 graduate of South Pasadena High School, Marshall held a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from Arizona State University and earned a Master's degree in Engineering Geology from the University of Arizona in 1967.

A veteran of the US Army Reserve, Marshall earned a Community College Teaching Credential and taught Earth Sciences at Saddleback College as an Adjunct Instructor for three years. He was also a qualified private pilot and a member of Sigma Gamma Epsilon professional geology fraternity.

Survivors include brother, John R Payne (SPHS '51), South Pasadena; son Scott Marshall Payne, Sheridan, Montana; daughter Tara Diane Payne, Camino, California; and three grandchildren. His former wife, Diane Lucille, died in 2014.
