Different places I have lived

Since Joanne and I have been married we have lived in about ten different towns in California, Utah, Texas and England. But in my years with Esso Exploration Inc., I worked in 104 different countries. Mostly in quite remote areas since my work was in frontier exploration.
We thought we had settled down in Lehi, Utah where we have lived for 20 years but now find ourselves in Trevelin, Patagonia, Argentina serving as missionaries for the LDS (Mormon) Church

Family history living in South Pasadena

We moved to South Pas in 1956 when I was in the 5th grade at El Centro School. I essentially left South Pas when I went off to school at BYU in the fall of 1964. My folks, however, lived in town until my father passed away in 2002. At 101 years old, my mother is still very much with us. She lives in her own apartment in Moorpark, California. Even though my sisters: Lynne (SPHS - 1958) and Stefanie (SPHS - 1969) live nearby, my mom still wants her independence and doesn't want anyone thinking that she is old. She reminds me of Miss Marple, her mind is like a "stainless steel bear trap".

Jim Beebe, Bob Podlech and Bill Sampson were my closest friends then and I am happy to say that we keep in touch, with the help of this site.
Jim and his wife Patty came down to Costa Rica for a visit in December, 2013. It was wonderful to spend those few days with such a good friend. Of course I got to show off our volcanoes.
Bob came down in June, 2014. We took the grand volcano tour.
Bill, Jim, and Bob have all been to Utah for the grand tour of the national and state parks.
Coming to Patagonia will be another matter.

School Memories

RAY SOLARI
"We may be small but we're slow"
"Second place just means you're the first loser"
"Average means you're just as close to the bottom as the top"

Organizations, clubs, sports, other groups I've been in at school &/or since

LDS Church, Football and Track then

LDS Church, Geological Society of America, International Society of Vulcanologists, and the U.S. Cycling Federation Now

Milestones & Epiphanies

Before moving to South Pas, I was raised in a small farming/ranching town in Eastern Oregon. I loved it there but it was the kind of town where most of the boys ended up working on a farm or ranch, or if they hit it big, they could work in a local store. Most of the local girls were married before they turned 18 or 19.
Attending SPHS was one of the greatest opportunities of my life and I think my three sisters would also agree. It opened doors that would never have been possible in the little backwater town of Vale, Oregon.
Thanks South Pas.

Pastimes & Hobbies

Kids, grand kids, cycling, volcanoes, our orchard, bonsai, kids, and grand kids.

[Date] What's happening in my life now

From October 1967 until January 1970, I was an LDS (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints/Mormon) missionary in Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica.
Joanne and I served as senior missionaries for the LDS Church in Liberia, Guanacaste, Costa Rica from August 2012 to August 2014. After a year and a half rest we are now serving another LDS mission, this time working in Trevelin, Chubut, Argentina and Futaleufu, Chile, both in Patagonia and just across the border.

Bill, what a nice tribute to your friend, Gene!  I so enjoyed seeing the pictures and reading about his life... so full, so accomplished!  And a lovely family ... my heart goes out to all of them!  No matter what our backgrounds were in high school, nor whom we hung out with ... we were, and still are, all connected to this wonderful town we grew up in, So. Pas.  And in school, we really did “know” everyone!!  It was a youth well lived and experienced.  Im so sorry for the loss of a good friend!
