Robert 'Bob' Arnett - Class Of 1949

Robert 'Bob' Arnett

Robert William Arnett, Jr, passed away peacefully after a brief battle with cancer on August 17, 2015. He lived 84 good years as a loving husband and father. Bob, as everyone knew him, was raised in San Marino, California. He attended South Pasadena High School and was in the graduating class of 1949. He went on to attend Claremont Men's College for two years and then University of Southern California where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1953. He spent several years in the Air Force in pilot training and was stationed in Hondo, Texas. He returned to Pasadena where he met Shirley Woodbury and, in 1959, they married. They resided in San Marino for 18 years where they raised their only daughter, Mary Loraine Arnett.

Bob was an avid golfer for many years, a big fan of college sports, a successful business man, and a devoted father and husband. He worked in insurance for more than two decades and then in 1976 he joined Fry Reglet Corporation, an architectural metals company based in Alhambra that his father had started in the 1950s. He served as president and chairman. He was active in the community, served on the Tournament of Roses committee in Pasadena and most fondly remembers the years when he was in charge of hosting the Big Ten football teams and coaches. He was also a founder of California State Bank where he served on the board of directors for 20 years.

While Carmel and San Francisco were two of his favorite places to visit, Bob and his wife Shirley enjoyed many months in their later years in a quaint beach community in southern Maine. They loved the charming ways of New England and thoroughly enjoyed the change in weather, the simple pleasures of the beach and welcoming their California family and friends who came to visit them. He and Shirley most recently resided in Orinda where they enjoyed being close to their only daughter and their three grandchildren. Bob thoroughly enjoyed being able to watch his grandchildren's sports and other activities. Bob would be described by all who knew him as kind, thoughtful, very personable, quick-witted and just fun to be around. He had a real zest for life and he passed feeling blessed and fortunate.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Shirley of 62 years, his daughter Mary Arnett Torchio, son-in-law J Torchio of Lafayette and his three grandchildren of whom he was so very proud - Sara, Katharine, and John. He is also survived by his sister, Jean Arnett Aldrich (SPHS '46) of Long Beach, California.
