Meryl Ruddy (Sweeney)

Meryl Ruddy Sweeney of San Juan Capistrano, California passed away on July 1, 2016. She was born November 5, 1928 to the late Orison and Hylda Ruddy of San Marino. Meryl was trained as a classical pianist, which evolved into a passion for education. After graduating from South Pasadena-San Marino High School, Meryl attended Occidental College; receiving her degree and teaching credential from California State University Long Beach with highest honors.

Meryl had a fulfilling career as an educator and administrator with the Garden Grove School District; joining her husband Bob in retirement in 1989. Meryl and Bob enjoyed 17 years of retirement; traveling the world and spending time with their loving family.

Meryl and Bob were inseparable during their 67 years of marriage. Bob passed in June 2016, with Meryl joining him just four weeks later. Meryl passed peacefully with her family around her at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. Meryl was battling respiratory and circulation challenges when she succumbed to pneumonia and heart failure. She is survived by her sister, Linda Ruddy Slaughter (SPHS '52) and Meryl's immediate family: daughter Colleen, son Mike and his wife Cindy, one grandson, and one great-grandson.
