Joyce JoAnn Smith (Smith) - Class Of 1948

Joyce JoAnn Smith, a 68-year resident of South Pasadena, passed away on March 6, 2012, with her family by her side.

JoAnn, lovingly known as "Nana," was born May 25, 1931 to Reverend Richard and Vickie Smith in Kansas City, Missouri.  At the age of 13, her family moved to South Pasadena, where she lived the remainder of her life.  She graduated from South Pasadena/San Marino High School in 1948.  She was a well known baton twirler who dazzled and marched for several years in the Rose Parade and was the baton twirler for the Los Angeles Rams football team.  She was a devoted and dedicated business woman for 62 years as a dispensing optician.  JoAnn also cared for many foster children who came through her home and were cared for with genuine love.  She was very active as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader and a loyal part of the PTA.  Later in life, she was active with a knitting and crochet group at the South Pasadena Senior Center.

JoAnn was married to Jack Smith and had two daughters, Glenda Smith Cappola (SPHS '72) and Patricia Smith Cocoris (SPHS '74).  She had two grandchildren, Matthew and Victoria Marshall, and was an active part of their upbringing.  She also had two great-grandchildren, Joshua and Kathryn Marshall, who were the love of her life.
