Nicholas Pulskamp - Class Of 1959 VIEW PROFILE

Nicholas Pulskamp

Nicholas Ryan Pulskamp passed away peacefully in the home that he loved on August 1, 2020. He was born October 3, 1941 in Pasadena to John and Agnes Pulskamp, and was the youngest of four children. Shortly thereafter his family moved to Bushnell Avenue in South Pasadena, to a home where Nick would reside for the better part of his life.

Nick graduated from South Pasadena High School in 1959, and attended Pasadena City College before going to the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. He returned to Southern California to attend USC and completed his BA degree in English in 1963. It was at this time he met his future wife, Bonnie Champion (SPHS '61), also from South Pasadena. Both Nick's leadership and creative abilities led him through a variety of careers throughout his life. He began by building and managing the first Medicare office for Aetna Insurance, before accepting a sales position with the pharmaceutical company Warner-Lambert. During his tenure with Warner-Lambert he was honored with the prestigious Elmer Bobst Award, for being among the top-producing salesmen in the country in 1975. He was an active member of the local Toastmaster's Club, and often credited the public speaking experience he gained there for his successes.

Nick married Bonnie in 1969 and their new growing family brought them back to Bushnell Avenue in South Pasadena, where they purchased his boyhood home. The home had fallen into disrepair, but restoring and maintaining the home was a commitment and passion that remained his for life. He left pharmaceutical sales to build a new business, PM Press, a full-service commercial printing company in North Hollywood. He was an active member of the Los Angeles Chapter of the International Association of Printing House Craftsmen, and served as president from 1987 - 1988. He designed, engineered and patented a prototype chipboard inserter, an auxiliary machine used in tandem with a printing press to insert chipboard between sheets of paper at precise intervals, automating the task for the pressman, reducing time and labor and increasing productivity and profitability. He registered a total of three patents with the US Patent Office and sold the production rights to Brackett, Inc. The Brackett 'Chipur Machine' is still in production today. With technology rapidly evolving in the printing industry, Nick sold his business and took a brief hiatus before pursuing his next career in real estate. He obtained his California Real Estate License in 1997, and represented residential buyers and sellers around the San Gabriel Valley with Podley, Caughey & Doan, and later MacGregor Realty.

Despite his dynamic and storied career path, Nick's greatest delight was his family and three daughters. He enjoyed quiet pursuits; reading literature, history, and biographies, walks through Descanso Gardens, and afternoon lunches in Laguna Beach. Nick had a vast amount of interesting knowledge on a wide breadth of topics and enjoyed intellectually stimulating conversation with loved ones and strangers alike. He was an avid hobbyist and restorer of Lionel model trains, which he had enjoyed since boyhood. Being of mechanical mind he could repair, design, or create almost anything. He took a keen interest in family genealogy and compiled photos, data and records of ancestors dating back hundreds of years. He took great pride in his longtime residence, with neighbors and friends whom he'd known for decades.

Nick is survived by his daughter Jennifer (SPHS '88), daughter Katherine (SPHS '92) and son-in-law Erik, daughter Emily (SPHS '03) and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother William Pulskamp (SPHS '50); sister Wanda Dionne Pulskamp Thomas, nephew Robert Smith-Meyer (SPHS '72); and by Bonnie, his wife of 37 years.
