Orange County, Upland, Greenville, SC

Family history living in South Pasadena

Lived in So. Pasadena from birth until age 14 (moved away after 8th grade).

Family members who also went to SPHS

Older brother Tom '72; his wife Susan Arenz James '72. My brother Will attended SPHS through Junior year, graduated from Mission Viejo HS is 1974.

Other SPHS graduates I keep in touch with are:

Kept in touch with Ron Drake '77 for many years after moving; so sorry to read of his passing. Occasional contact with Vince DeQuattro '77 through Classmates. Would gladly communicate with anyone who cares to contact me through the site or mrprocedure@gmail.com.

School Memories

Memories of SP schools mostly very positive. 8th grade was my lifetime academic peak. Moving to south Orange County was a huge step down academically. Though recently came to the realization I could fret over leaving SP after 8th grade or be grateful I did live in SP for 14 years.

Organizations, clubs, sports, other groups I've been in at school &/or since

I suppose it may not count since it wasn't at SPHS, but ran cross country and was star of school newspaper staff, including cartoonist. In college, achieved my dream of playing ice hockey (well, playing some, watching from the bench a lot) for Cal State Long Beach club team.

Milestones & Epiphanies

Graduated CSULB 1983 with a BS in Geology though never worked in the field. Highlight of college life was coming to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ in December 1979. To say that has made a huge difference is an equally huge understatement.

Pastimes & Hobbies

Walking (or being walked by) a 2-year old Siberian husky. Writing based on my extensive experience as a doctoral student in the School of Hard Knocks.

Favorite Music, Songs, Bands

Mostly late 1960s/early 1970s pop and soul. I became a self-taught authority on the Billboard charts, though my knowledge comes to a crashing halt about 1982. I enjoy the occasional concerts featuring acts from the 60s and 70s...Beach Boys, Happy Together Tour, Turtles, Gary Puckett/Union Gap, Righteous Bros. both before and after Bobby Hatfield)...a dwindling number of artists who made memorable music (so thankful I saw the great Glen Campbell before his illness and passing). So many I wish I had seen.

Favorite Books, Magazines, Movies, TV, Websites, YouTubes, etc,

Right now, virtually no TV...Books: the Good Book, the Bible; both Seabiscuit and Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand were incredible--I await a third title from her (the movies based on both were excellent as well). Enjoy reading business books such as Jason Jennings and John Collins. No current magazines of interest. Watch a bunch of movies while donating platelets, mostly concluding how glad I am not to have spent money to watch them. Favorite two movies ever, both set in and shot in Indiana...Breaking Away (1979) and Hoosiers (1986).

[Date] What's happening in my life now

7/8/2015: writing, writing, writing. I have a blog on instructional communication, continuous improvement, etc. at mrprocedure.com (I acquired the nickname "Mr. Procedure" at a previous career stop, and grew to like it). I have written a book, "Writing Operating Procedures," which at present is only a free e-book.
12/4/2018: working on a book that I guess would fit in the "Christian living" genre, applying the rules of quality management to family management. And getting to know my adorable grandson. What a blessing!!!

One last comment...

I lived the first 14 years of my life in So. Pas., living on Stratford Ave., then Fletcher Ave. My older brother Tom ('72) was the only one of us five who graduated from SPHS. Following 8th grade, my family moved to Mission Viejo, later to El Toro (what is now Lake Forest) in Orange County, where I graduated from El Toro HS in 1977. Friends included John Tormey and Vince DeQuattro, two of the most creative people I've ever met; Dale Bishop ('76) who lived across the street, now a doctor; Ted Congdon, who lived on Milan and became a cross country phenom, among many many others. I'm most happy to reconnect with anyone who may remember me (not that I was so memorable).

What I'd like my classmates to know about me before our next reunion: March 30, 2020--I am wrapped up in writing, both professionally and personally. I am very close to submitting my "Christian Living" book which has taken on a new light with the current coronavirus situation. If successful it will lead to a number of derivative titles that will take the rest of my life to complete. Important to me: one wife, four kids, one grandson, and loving each and praying for each. Great professional accomplishments mean less and less as we move along in life...and I would believe that even if I had any great professional accomplishments.

It is with great sadness I read of Tom's passing. His family lived a few houses north of us on Stratford Ave. and we rode our bikes on several adventures along the abandoned Southern Pacific right of way near Las Flores School. Condolences to the family.

So sad to read of Paul Cole's passing. I did not know him personally, but he was on my brother's Middle League team (Crossbow) in 1968 and was an absolute flame-thrower on the mound. My brother once caught warmup pitches for him and his hand was battered and blistered afterward. I think he threw 2 or 3 no-hitters that year. We were all stunned when it was announced that Bill Willgus (also recently passed) had been named best pitcher instead of Paul. Later I remember him as the placekicker on So. Pas's 1969 3A champions. If he played other positions I was not aware. But he was a marvel to watch on the mound in that one Middle League season. My condolences to his family and his friends and teammates. Gone too soon for sure.

I am so saddened to hear about Steve's passing. We lived across the street from the Christensen house on Fletcher Ave., and were involved in many pick-up football games and other activities on our street. We left the city in 1973 but fondly remember those days. To Linda, Mike and Gary, my deepest condolences. Tim James, would-be class of 1977.

I am so sorry to read that Hank Swanson has passed away. Though I did not know him well our paths crossed on multiple occasions on Little League fields (watching his home runs leave the major league park). He was an excellent all-around athlete and wish all of his family well.

So sorry to read of Daniel's passing. He and I were teammates on the "Fairmont Enterprises" team in the A.L. Little League in 1970. I am happy to read of his love for the Lord and knowledge that he is in the Savior's presence. Condolences to Wesley and the Swain family at this time.

My condolences on Guy Charno's death to all of his family. I knew Guy from Marengo as well as SPJHS. He was genuinely funny though not necessarily in a class clown way. It does not surprise me he followed his father into law enforcement, among a number of other careers he apparently had. He was a good guy and I am sorry to hear he has passed away.

I did not know Chris in So. Pasadena but came to know him through campus Christian ministry at Cal State Long Beach. He was dedicated to the ministry and if I remember correctly a great fan of motor sports. He apparently passed away while playing soccer in Orange County. I am sad to hear of his passing but know he is in the presence of the Savior he served.
