6 Die in Plane Crash on Shore
A four-engine navy super-Constellation crashed in flames near Chestertown late one afternoon last week, killing three officers and three enlisted men.
The big ship, attached to the Air Transport Squadron 1 at the Patuxent Naval Air Station, was on a routine training flight when it apparently developed mechanical trouble at an altitude between 10,000 and 12,000 feet.
A jet pilot flying near the plane reported that it exploded in midair. It hit the ground less than 50 feet from six workmen building a house of a bluff at Comegy Bight.
Dead were identified as Lieutenant Commanders Robert E Terris, Welby K Williams and Harold Lettvin, and Chief Aviation Machinist's Mate Edward C Saxe, Gerald J Lawler and Louis Patrick Fox.
