Robert Herring

February 22, 1909 - March 7, 1996

Robert Herring died at Hillhaven Nursing home. He was 87. Born in Alston, Massachusetts, he became a California resident at the age of 14 and had lived in Santa Cruz for the past 17 years.

He was an active volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America and the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History. He was a member of the Santa Cruz Handweavers Guild, the Santa Cruz Indian Council and the Adobe Coalition, where he helped restore the Mission Adobe. He also was interested in amateur radio and belonged to the Santa Cruz Amateur Radio Club, holding the call W6WQY.

He is survived by his wife, Edith whom he met in San Francisco while working as an electrical engineer and designer of houses and churches for an architectural firm. Mr Herring is also survived by a brother, Dennison Herring (SPHS '38) of Grass Valley; four sons, Dennis Herring and Joel Herring, both of Red Bluff, Duncan Herring of Imbler, Oregon; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
