Sally Floyd (Roche) - Class Of 1951

Sally Floyd Roche of Lafayette, California was born in Oakland June 3, 1933 to Hugh and Helen Floyd. She died February 8, 2014.

Sally's family moved to South Pasadena in the 1940s where she graduated from South Pasadena/San Marino High School. She was very active in high school, where she made lifelong friends. She ended her career there as leader of the school drill team, the Tigerettes. She went on to the University of California Berkeley, attaining an AA degree in 1953. While at Cal, Sally was a member of Tri Delta sorority. She remained close to many of her sorority sisters for the rest of her life. After Berkeley, Sally went on to Heald Business School for one year.

While at Berkeley, she met her future husband, Bob Roche; they were married in June 1954. Sally was active in the community, belonging to the Lafayette Woman's Club and the Play Group, and volunteering with the Lafayette Community Center Development Committee and Las Trampas, Inc. She was an avid gardener, tennis player, and bridge player. She and Bob travelled extensively, often with friends, throughout the U.S., Canada, South America, Africa, Europe, and Asia.

Sally is survived by her husband Bob; daughter Teri (Michael) Drobnick and son David (Nancy); and ten grandchildren.  She was predeceased by her son Robert, earlier this year. Sally enjoyed entertaining her many friends and did so until her final illness. She was deeply loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed.

Thomas Zachary Taylor (1951)

I checked into So Pas on the first day of the second semester of my junior year. I had slept on my neck wrong and woke with a stiff neck that day. At lunch, I felt like I had just gotten off the handicapped bus. I was in pain and couldn’t move any which way with out turning my whole body. I was alone and felt like everyone was staring the pathetic crip. I turned around, and there she was, about 6” from my face. My whole world changed. She hand-sewed me a shirt for a luau, knitted me some argyles that I wore into rags, and encouraged me to try out for cheerleading. After a year and a half of high school bliss, she went to Cal and I to the U of A. Our paths never crossed again, but she actually saved my life. I was elected a cheerleader and dropped out of football. I did not yet weigh 115 lbs and would have been creamed by some beefy linebacker (Bob Long) and probably would have ended up the rest of my life in a wheel chair. Instead, I lettered in tennis and became an air force pilot. We all will see Sal Gal again in heaven if we ever repent :)

Sally and I became friends through Young Life.  She was one of my favorite people.  I'm so sorry to hear of her passing.

Sally was just the best of a friend.  She, Tom Taylor, I and my first wife Shirley Gough used to double date.  As Tom implied, Sally gave her best to you when you were down and out.  I last saw her at our 40th where we got to have a nice long chat.  What a wonderful friend.
