Velma Jean Scott (Howell) - Class Of 1952

Jean was born Velma Jean Scott, October 4, 1934, to proud parents Don and Jean Scott in Lincoln, Nebraska.  When she was four, her family moved to California.  Velma Jean graduated from South Pasadena High School in 1952 and attended Pasadena City College.  She married Don Howell (SPHS '49) in 1953 and changed her name to Jean Scott Howell.

Jean was a go-getter.  She knew what she wanted and how to get it.  Jean worked full-time to help support her husband through engineering school at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.  They graduated in 1957 (Jean received an official "Pushing Hubbies Through Degree") shortly after having their first child, Debra.  They moved to Schenectady, New York, and then Erie, Pennsylvania where they had their second daughter, Cheryl.  They eventually settled in La Verne, California and had three more children, Scott, Dartmore (Gary), and Connie.  Jean instilled in her kids a life-long love of learning, with the kids going on to earn nine college degrees between them.

After some of the kids moved on to start their careers and families, Jean became secretary/office manager at Mt. SAC's continuation school in San Dimas.  She also taught computer classes there--the students were often surprised that this older woman knew more about computers than they did.

Jean's creative abilities were incredible.  Table centerpieces, sewing, quilting, custom gift tags, edible art, holiday decorations, and custom embroidered items for every child and occasion.  She loved a house full of family, friends, and laughter.  Jean was the nexus of family love and activities.  She had a way of turning even the minor "holidays" into special events.  Her Super Bowl spread was second to none.

Never bitter, judgmental or petty.  Always selfless, encouraging, and loving.  Our beloved wife, sister, mom, grandmother, and great-grandmother died with dignity March 20, 2012, surrounded by family, at the age of 77 years.
