May 5, 1925 - April 28, 2022

Doris passed away at Atherton Baptist Homes in Alhambra at the age of 96, of pneumonia. Doris was a dedicated Educator, having taught school in various venues and countries for 50 years. She was born to Delos and Helen Fowler Eldred (SPHS 1915) and grew up in San Marino, attending South Pasadena High School where she excelled and achieved the First Honor Scholarship in her class, was a member of California Scholarship Federation, Senate Club, French Club, Allied Youth and was president of the Girls League. She was awarded the Citizenship Award by the Daughters of the American Revolution, having been voted the finest citizen of her class of 1943.

Dorie attended Occidental College and graduated in 1947 Phi Beta Kappa. Her first teaching job was in Peking, China, but that lasted only one year due to the Communist take-over in 1948. She and her cohorts were evacuated under the cover of darkness by the US Navy. She continued to teach overseas, in Italy and in England, before eventually returning home. She taught for decades in Temple City, being awarded Honorary Life Membership by the Longden PTA. When not teaching, Dorie enjoyed traveling--both outside and within the United States. Dorie's Christian faith was very important to her. She volunteered in many different ways at Lake Avenue Church and World Vision. Dorie was a cat lover and loved her family, which was evident by her constant presence and generosity.

Dorie was predeceased by her siblings, Mary Helen Eldred Kent '40, and William Eldred '45. She is survived by cousins and generations of nieces and nephews.
