John L. Connolly Jr - Class Of 1952

John L. Connolly Jr

John Leonard Connolly, Jr was born in California to John and Bertha Connolly. Ten days later, he was the youngest child to fly via seaplane to Catalina Island, where his father's company, Connolly Pacific operated the quarry. So began John's lifetime love for the island. After 80 years of abundant living, John passed away on November 21, 2014. He was an avid student of life, always curious about its complexity and its beauty.

Joh graduated with a BA from Occidental, a Master's from USC, and a PhD from University of Pennsylvania. A Merchant Mariner in his youth, he became fascinated with the history of art. He inspired generations of students throughout his career in art history, teaching at SUNY Binghamton, Reed, Dartmouth, Duke, Wake Forest, Notre Dame, Johns Hopkins and MICA. He traveled throughout Europe, and especially loved exploring the streets and museums of his beloved Paris.

John was devoted to his wife Amy Bloom Connolly and children Bridgid (husband Dave), John Patrick (wife Tamara), and Gabriel (wife Juliana). His grandchildren Maximo and Milo were his constant delight.
