Weldon Fairplay Awards

Of the many scholarships and awards presented each year to South Pasadena High School seniors, perhaps the most meaningful and prestigious are the Weldon Fairplay Awards. With the criteria of scholarship, integrity, responsibility, good sportsmanship, and being fair to all people, it is no wonder that it is so highly regarded. The Weldon Fairplay Award is the school's equivalent to winning the Oscar and goes to six students who have gone the extra mile.

The Weldon Awards were established in 1929 by William R.H. Weldon, a long-time resident of South Pasadena. He was a member of the school board for many years and served as the board president in 1929. Four of his six sons attended school in South Pasadena. Weldon's interest in fair play and leadership led him to create the award, given to three senior girls and three senior boys.

The names of all the recipients since 1929 are engraved on the Weldon loving cup. In addition, each recipient receives a gold pin and a certificate. The winners are selected each year for demonstrating honor, character and leadership. That all goes along with showing integrity, honesty, responsibility and, most of all, fair play.

Selecting the winners is no easy feat. The senior class nominates candidates and a selection committee comprised of administrators, students and faculty members makes the final decision. Six South Pas Seniors Receive Prestigious Weldon Award.
