Agnes Jean Barker (Phelps) - Class Of 1942 VIEW PROFILE

Agnes Jean Barker (Phelps)

Jean Barker Phelps graduated from South Pasadena High School in 1942. She attended Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts where she met her future husband, James Wesley Phelps. They married shortly after her graduation in 1946 and moved to California. They were married for 66 years.

The family moved often over the years, following James's career as an insurance executive. Their place of residence for the last several years was back in southern California in the Rancho Bernardo area of San Diego. They had four children: Darsie Phelps Riccio, Charles Barker Phelps, Bruce Daniels Phelps, and Craig Cameron Phelps. The children live all over the country; Arizona, New York, South Carolina, and Vermont. There are eight granddaughters.

Jean was active in the AAUW (American Association of University Women) her entire life. She was an avid crossword puzzler, and had many other interests. Her affection for animals marked her last years. She will be dearly missed by all of us.

Darsie Phelps Riccio, daughter

On a personal note, I can tell you that my mother taught me the South Pasadena High School fight song when I was very young and I can still sing every word! Likewise, I taught it to my own children, and I would not be surprised if the same is true of my brothers and their children.
