Jean Evelyn Hayes (Cherniss)

Jean Hayes Cherniss, born March 27, 1921, passed away May 20, 2014, due to heart failure. She was 93.

Family was always a priority with Jean. She was always there to help with the grandchildren which were a joy in her life. Throughout the years she was an active member in organizations such as the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Women's Republican Club, the Women's Club of South Pasadena, and many others. She was especially proud of her admittance in the Daughters of the American Revolution. In later years she enjoyed traveling with Sid to Australia, Hawaii, England, and throughout the United States, visiting friends and relatives. Jean followed her love of art, taking painting lessons which she loved. Through the years she painted many beautiful oil and water colors, winning numerous honors in local art contests.

Jean is survived by her son, Jim Cherniss '59 and wife Karen of Napa, California; her daughter Betty Hier '65 and husband Gary of Winooski, Vermont; seven grandchildren:  Peter Cherniss '86 and wife Kim, Laura Hier, Kristin (Aaron) Webster, Ryan (Jessica) Hier, Kelli Hier, Catherine (Rusty) Williams, and Cary (Rain) Villasica; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. She also leaves behind her cousin Marilyn Dobson and many nieces and nephews.
