-- Watched a whole bunch of large rocket engine tests at NASA - various facilities
-- Watched a launch from Cape Kennedy
-- Involved in the progress of digital data storage from 3 Megabytes (3,000,000 bytes) in a 159 pound package to more than one terabyte 1,000,000,000,000 bytes) in a five pound package and 4 gigabytes (4,000,000,000 bytes) on a postage stamp
-- Involved in the development of laser printing, laser scanning, image processing and editing, word processing, optical data storage, and (as an observer and user) the development of Internet protocols and the Internet! What a wild ride!! Over 40 years worth and still learning!

One of my projects in the early 1980s was to store 4 gigabytes of data on a 14 inch diameter glass disk using lasers to write and read the data. I mostly watched the project team do the real design work and keep the paperwork off of their backs. We accomplished the objective but that technique was quickly surpassed by plastic media, audio CDs, video Discs and eventually the CD-ROM and DVDs.

Currently serve as Staff Engineer for a local Oceanside TV station, KOCT. Do everything from Voice Overs to fixing cables, cameras, recorders and anything that breaks. Get to twiddle knobs on shoots like football games, council meetings, music events and and stuff like that there. It is more fun than actually working!

School Memories:

Wayne Steimle's physics class.
The Link Trainer
Mr. Bookhout's chmistry class.
My mother had both Al Adams and Hester Lauman as teachers in the 1920s. Ed Jacobs was friends with my uncle and I took his radio class in my Sophomore year.

We discovered that the pay phone outside of the study hall/cafeteria was a slot machine. Id didn't work one day so I tracked down the fact that the ground wire was broken at a nearby water pipe. Reconnected it and the phone dumped a handful of dimes. Hmmm . . .this looked promising until the phone company reconnected it permanently.

Milestones & Epiphanies:

I actually graduated but I don't remember spending much time in class. Most of my time seemed to be spent in Mr. Steimle's room and in the Link trainer.
