I really did not know Steve very well. However, there is a photograph taken at The Wedge on the cover of a book called The Art of Body Surfing which says the body surfer in the photo is named Steve Barna. The book and photo are of about the right vintage. I've always been curious. He obviously knew what he was doing on the wave in question.
Rumor had it that he left his draft physical WITH his file back in those pre-computer days. If the rumor is true, I salute you, posthumously. May local 92 never again hear of you. Overhead sets and offshore winds to you.
