Margaret 'Peg' Garlinghouse (Sperry) - Class Of 1946

Margaret "Peg" Garlinghouse Sperry, 84, of Glen Carbon, Illinois, passed away July 22, 2012 in Maryville, Illinois.

Peg was born in Los Angeles, California on February 29, 1928 to Ferne and Albert Garlinghouse.  She married Donald Sperry in 1951.  Peg grew up in South Pasadena, her father a civil engineer who worked on the Hoover Dam.  He and his brothers invented a special model of wheelbarrow that became the industry standard and was used by the Works Progress Administration (WPA).

Peg was a graduate of the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) with a degree in textile and apparel merchandising.  She spent most of her life as a homemaker and volunteer, working with several community organizations.  In 1986, she and her husband Don, moved from South Pasadena to Palm Springs, where she volunteered with the Palm Springs Art Museum and was an avid golfer and swimmer.  Don passed away in 1999 and in 2010, Peg moved to Glen Carbon, IL to be closer to her family.

Peg had a vibrant personality and beautiful smile.  She recently celebrated her 21st leap-year birthday and always embraced her youthful spirit.  Peg was athletic, stylish, and giving. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, wife, mother-in-law, and friend.  Surviving are her daughter, Katie (Scott) McMullen (SPHS '73) of O'Fallon, IL; son, David (Cathy) Sperry (SPHS '71) of Cincinnati, Ohio; four grandchildren and brother, Albert (Barbara) Garlinghouse (SPHS '50) of Mammoth Lakes, California.
