Darwin E Waterman - Class Of 1949

Darwin E Waterman

Darwin Waterman (December 19, 1930 - July 25, 2015) was born in Glendale, California to Berness and Emma Waterman. He had one sister, Phyllis Waterman Kiser, who predeceased him. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, of the home; his son, Steve (Marie) of Rowlett, Texas; his daughter Paula (Jeff) Duerksen, of Oklahoma City; and three grandchildren.

Darwin lived in South Pasadena until joining the Air Force in 1951. He served in Korea until 1952, and when he returned home, he attended California State University at Los Angeles. After he graduated, he began his lifelong career in education. He first taught history and coached football in two high schools in Southern California, and some of his students still remember him and write to their favorite teacher, Mr W.

After earning an MA from Pasadena College in 1965, he began his career as a school psychologist. He was the county psychologist for San Bernardino County from 1966 until 1972. He traveled the entire county providing psychological services to special education students and their teachers. In 1970, he enrolled at the University of Tulsa to begin work on his doctorate. In 1972, he received a teaching position at University of Central Oklahoma, then Central State College, and he and his family moved to Oklahoma. He received his EdD in 1973 and taught at UCO until 2000.

Darwin was a proud veteran of the US Air Force, serving both in Korea and with the Oklahoma Air National Guard for twenty years. Above all, Darwin loved his family. He and his wife, Carolyn were married 49 years this past June. His wife, children and his grandchildren were his great loves and great sources of pride. He is a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, and his memory will be strong and sweet in his family's hearts, and in the hearts of all those who were blessed by his sparkling blue eyes, sense of humor and joy in life.
