Alan Weirick passed away, with family beside him, on December 22, 2013 at his home in Claremont, California at the age of 84 after successfully battling cancer for four years. Born in Pasadena on November 13, 1929, Alan was the son of Wallace and Marjorie Weirick and a third generation Southern California. Alan was raised in San Marino and attended Huntington Middle School and South Pasadena High School. He grew up in a golden era for Southern California, playing in the open spaces that surrounded San Marino at the time.

After graduation, Alan attended Pomona College, where he served in the Reserve Officer Training Corps, was a member of Kappa Delta fraternity, and was an all-conference tackle on the Pomona Sagehens football team before graduating in 1952. At Pomona, Alan met the love of his life and wife of 57 years, Leilani Purnell. After Alan's brief service in the US Army following graduation, Alan and Leilani were married in 1956. Alan received a master's degree in agricultural economics from UC Davis in 1955 and then attended Stanford Business School, graduating with an MBA in 1959. Alan worked for the Kern County Land Company before moving to Pasadena and later back to San Marino in 1970, where Alan and Leilani raised their four children, Greg, Carolyn, Brad, and Brent.

In Pasadena, Alan established an independent real estate appraisal business and developed his life-long passion for real estate--becoming a leading expert in Southern California land appraisal and real estate appraisal ethics. While building his appraisal practice, Alan also worked with his father and later his brother Richard to purchase, develop, and acquire commercial and residential real estate throughout Southern California. After his parents passed, Alan and his brother oversaw the creation of a family real estate investment business, which ultimately became Alan's principal business focus.

Alan's family, his religious and charitable interests and his devotion to, and love for, his hometown were his true passions. Alan was very active in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, San Marino Rotary, the San Marino City Club and Pasadena Neighborhood Housing Services. Alan was an avid gardener, insisting on maintaining his own beautiful yard and flower and vegetable gardens at the family's long-time home on Sherwood Road. Alan took great pride in his city, and in his humble way he spent time through various service organizations and his own private efforts to make his city a better place. To the occasional embarrassment of his kids, he could often be spotted weeding, re-planting and maintaining the "floral flag" that had been planted for the United States bicentennial at Huntington Drive and San Marino Avenue. In 2009, when the San Marino Girl Scouts finally discovered that Alan had been secretly maintaining and replanting the floral scout emblem for more than 20 years in front of their scout house, they bestowed him with a "Mystery Gardener" award to commemorate the generous and anonymous donation of his time.

Getting closer to retirement, he became very active at Church of Our Saviour, San Gabriel, where he founded an inter-faith group that evolved into a Los Angeles Episcopal Diocese Task Force working for peace and justice in the Holy Land. Late in life he remained incredibly energetic and young at heart, driving all around Southern California to attend Episcopal church activities, Rotary Club meetings, peace and justice conferences, and his grandchildren's school and sports activities, never wanting to miss a thing. Alan was a devoted and loving father, husband, brother, uncle, and grandfather. His kind, generous and humble nature, and the example this set for his family and friends, are his lasting legacy.

Alan is survived by his wife Leilani, his four children and their spouses, eight grandchildren and his siblings, Richard Weirick (SPHS '46) of Ojai, Martha Mulfinger (SPHS '49) of San Marino, Phyllis Venegas (SPHS '53) of San Jose, Costa Rica, and his 15 nieces and nephews.
