Carl and I were good friends in high school and beyond. We enjoyed riding our motor scooters
around town. On one such trip, we were in the Montery Hills and were riding down very steep
Brunswick Street toward Monerey Road. The brakes on my scooter gave out on the way down.
Carl had already stopped at the bottom of the hill. I shot by him at about 40 mph, crossing
Monterey Road between cars. Carl and I both earned our first gray hairs that day. At class reunions,
we always reminised about that day in 1961. I'll miss my old friend. Steve Ledder '60
