Jane Stewart (White) - Class Of 1959

Jane Stewart (White)

Jane was born February 3, 1942 at a US Army Artillery installation in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. Her father was a Lt Colonel in the Army before moving the family to South Pasadena after World War II where most of us knew him as a veterinarian. She went to Oneonta Grammar School where she was diagnosed with a reading disorder, and the family was told high school would probably be the end of her education. Wrong! She got a BA from Whittier College and later returned to Oneonta as a teacher and reading specialist. Go Figure!

Jane was also a music lover, playing the piano at our elementary and junior high graduations, as well as being a recipient of the SPHS Music Award. In 9th grade she was in bed for over a year due to an unknown viral condition. Later on she almost didn't make it due to Legionnaire's Disease. Most of us remember her as quiet, sweet and passive, but after marrying a fireman and dealing with all of his fireman friends, those who spoke at her memorial exposed her as a tough and focused point person for many fire-fighter activities.

Jane died from pancreatic cancer that was diagnosed on Valentine's Day resulting in her passing on March 11, 2016. Jane's prayer for each of us was written on the cover of her memorial program, taken from Romans 15:13, "I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in Him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit."
