The County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) announced the active-duty death of Fire Captain Michael H Mercado at the age of 51. This devastating loss has been felt across the entire Department.

With over 25 years of service to the LACoFD, Captain Mercado's last assignment was at Fire Station 90 in the City of South El Monte. He dedicated his life to protecting and serving residents and communities throughout Los Angeles County with care and integrity.

"The County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors, President Dave Gillotte of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1014, and I extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to the Mercado family during this profoundly difficult time," said Fire Chief Anthony C Marrone.

The Department will always remember Captain Mercado's legacy, bravery, as well as the lasting impact he had on those who had the pleasure of knowing and working with him. Michael, affectionately known as "Big Cat," was remembered for being more than a dedicated public servant - he was a community hero, mentor, and most importantly, he was a cherished husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend to all who knew and loved him.

During Michael's memorial service, the flag that flew over Fire Station 90 was presented to Michael's wife, Sian, by Fire Chief Anthony C Marrone along with a bible from Local 1014 President Dave Gillotte.

May God bless Michael, his family, memory, and the many loved ones he leaves behind. He will never be forgotten. On behalf of the LACoFD, please accept our heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for thew outpouring of love, support, and condolences extended to the Mercado and Fire Department families.
