Samuel McCray Garrett

Samuel McCray Garrett, 89, a retired clergyman and professor of church history, died June 5, 2005 at the Canterbury Woods Medical Center in Pacific Grove. He was born April 12, 1916 in Los Angeles, and lived in Pacific Grove for 20 years.

Dr Garrett received his Doctor of Philosophy degree from Harvard University in 1959, and honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in 1984. He taught church history at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific, and the Graduate Theological Union, both in Berkeley, for 34 years. He also taught at the Anglican seminary in Uganda and Ripon College in Oxford, England. He had a life-long commitment to the Episcopal Church, and to theological scholarship and education. He was very committed to his students and maintained life-long friendships with many of them. Dr Garrett was a member of St Mary's by the Sea Episcopal Church, where he assisted with services and served on the parish's Social Concerns committee. He continued his commitment to education, following his retirement, by organizing classes in a wide variety of topics for the residents of Canterbury Woods.

He is survived by his sister, Kathleen Garrett Flanders (SPHS '38) of San Luis Obispo; two sons, Robert Garrett of Iowa City, Iowa, and Kevin Garrett of Edmonds, Washington; a daughter Kathleen Garrett of Brooklyn, New York; and two grandchildren. His wife, Mary Elizabeth Garrett, died in 2001; his brother, Stanley Garrett (SPHS '36) died in 1994.
