Anthony J "Tony" Garrett - Class Of 1949

Anthony J Tony Garrett

Anthony Garrett  '49  died at his home on Rincon Point, Carpinteria, California on November 30, 2003, peacefully and painlessly, surrounded by the love of his family.  Born on June 22, 1931 in Los Angeles, California, Tony was graduated from South Pasadena High School in 1949, where he was active in athletics and was a recipient of the American Legion Award; and in 1953 from Stanford University, where he played football, was President of the Mu Chapter of Zeta Psi fraternity and an avid falconer.  Tony served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps, earned his wings, flew jet fighters and advanced to the rank of Captain.

After a successful career in the aerospace industry, Tony joined Dean Witter & Co.  He distinguished himself as a broker and branch manager, and later became Senior Vice President and Regional Manager.  He co-managed Dean Witter's Southern California Region for over 15 years.  Throughout his career, he mentored younger brokers and managers, and exemplified the highest standards of integrity.  He retired from Morgan Stanley Dean Witter in 1996.  Tony had a spiritual relationship with the wilderness, and helped to instill in his family a deep love of nature.  A life-long outdoorsman, he took friends and family members on countless trips into some of the most beautiful and remote areas of North America, hiking, mountain climbing, fishing, hunting, birding, and taking photographs--teaching an abiding respect for all things wild.  He was proud of having climbed Africa's Mount Kilimanjaro (19,342 feet) at the age of 61, with his daughter Gretchen.  An avid hunter, some of his trophies are entered in the record books of the Boone and Crockett Cllub.

Tony believed that people can achieve anything they put their hearts and minds to.  He served for many years on the Board of the South Pasadena-San Marino YMCA with his brother Bob.  He is survived by his wife Rosalind Stubenberg, his son and son-in-law Joseph R. Garrett and John Lomibao, his daughter and son-in-law, Gretchen Garrrett Valentine and William Valentine, his stepson and daughter-in-law Kurt and Lisa Raymond, his stepchildren John Fink and Laurie Bickerstaff, his grandchildren Bryce, Sophia, and Alex, his sister Joan Vaillancourt, his sister-in-law Joan Garrett, his brothers and sisters-in-law John C. and Carolyn Garrett, and James J. Garrett and Maria P. Rivera, and by many nieces and nephews.  Tony was preceded in death by his wife Roberta, his brother Bob and his wife Juliana.
