Kenneth Cowles - Class Of 1953

Kenneth Cowles

Manila, Philippines, November 14, 1960.  A U.S. Navy plane crash claimed the lives of the admiral commanding the American Naval base at Subic Bay.  Killed along with Rear Adm. Arthur Spring, 52, was his wife, Clare, 52.  Also killed were the Admiral's aide, Lt (jg) Karl Ziegenhagen, the pilot, Lt. Cmdr. Wade K. Smith; the co-pilot, Lt. (jg) Kenneth Cowles of San Marino, California, and Airman Cecil G. Johnson.  U.S. Navy spokesmen theorized the admiral's plane either developed engine trouble or ran into a downdraft.
