Doreen O'Gara (Slonina) - Class Of 1954

Doreen O'Gara Slonina (October 26, 1936 - May 8, 2013) - A "South Pasadena" girl, Doreen had a "Norman Rockwell" youth.  As a young adult, she helped at the USO.  She met Don while working the order desk.  They married, had two girls and moved to Burbank.

Doreen worked in the cafeteria at LBJH for a few years and then Macy's in Glendale from 1977 to 1995, stopping only after her first battle with cancer and having to take care of her elderly aunt.  Doreen never made an enemy.  Her motto was "kill them with kindness".  She always had a loving ear to listen and encourage people. Many people called her "mom".  Doreen endured losing her brother Lawrence (SPHS '54), and battling cancer twice.  She had an incredible passion for her garden, loved the sun on her back, teaching her grandchildren to drive, and catching up with her nieces and nephew.

Doreen passed away in Burbank with her family at her side.  She is survived by Donald, her husband of 55 years; daughters, Darlene Riegler and Dawnene Brown; grandchildren, Ross, Rick, and Abigayle; as well as nieces Debra, Kathy, and Patti, and nephew Shawn; and her 106-year-old Aunt Lucille, whom Doreen cared for over 30 years.  Those who called her "mom" are too numerous to mention.
