J Michael Komes - Class Of 1954 VIEW PROFILE

J Michael Komes

J Michael Komes passed away peacefully on August 11, 2015. He was 79. Mike was born on March 30, 1936 in Sacramento, California to Jerome and Flora Komes. He was a graduate of San Jose State University in 1963 and a veteran who served in the US Army Corp of Engineers.

Mike devoted his entire career to Bechtel Group (BGI) until his retirement in 1991. He started as an Assistant Field Manager and rose to the ranks of Director and President. His former colleagues describe him as a legend and renegade manager who always valued the employee and innovation.

With his siblings and parents, Mike was an owner of Flora Springs Winery, one of Napa Valley's oldest family-run wineries. His love of schnauzers grew into a business which his wife Pat owned and operated, Animal Crackers Boarding and Grooming in Spring, Texas.

Mike was a true bibliophile and collector of knowledge. He had a knack in seeking out unique shops with the most specialized craftsmen to teach him their craft. Nothing intrigued him more than the art of smoking perfect barbecue. He'd drive anywhere to try a new recipe, and you knew you were lucky if he brought you along.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia Komes; his four daughters and sons-in-law:  Michelle and Steve Dolge of Washington, DC, Jeannine and Dave Ross of London, England, Lisa and Curt Myers of Frederick, Maryland, and Nadine and Scott McIntosh of Albuquerque, New Mexico; his step-daughter Annette Falconett of Houston, Texas; six grandsons and three granddaughters; his siblings and their spouses: John and Carrie Komes, and Julie and Pat Garvey, both of St Helena, California; and his loyal dogs, Apollo, Jasmine, and Reggie.
