Samuel Hudson McClung - Class Of 1947

Samuel Hudson McClung

Samuel Hudson McClung III, born March 30, 1929 in South Pasadena, passed away due to chronic illness on August 19, 2016 in Lake San Marcos, California. He was 87.

Samuel attended South Pasadena High School, Occidental College, and Long Beach State. He enlisted in the US Navy and following OCS training, served from 1952 - 1956 in Sasebo, Japan. His chief duties were to maintain security and run the base fire department. Following the military service he had a long career as a Human Resources Director for several aluminum and aerospace parts companies.

Sam married Carol Ruth Gentry who preceded him in death in 2008. He loved family, the Pot Luck Group (originally 18 Oxy graduates who gathered together each month for over 60 years), friends at Lake San Marcos, golf, tennis, the Romeos (octogenarian lunch bunch) and the Firefighter Senior Auxiliary. He helped to form and served on the auxiliary units in both San Marcos and Escondido by providing support to the local fire units during their fire calls. Sam is survived by three children:  Samuel McClung (Melissa) of Tucson, Arizona, Margaret Lacy (Thomas) of Stevenson, Alabama, and Richard McClung (Donna) of Clovis, California; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters Peggy McClung Thomas (SPHS '39) and Betsy McClung Pratt (SPHS '42); and many nieces and nephews.

Sam had a winning smile and brought laughter to all. We are better people for having known him. Sam was honored at his memorial service by the hoisting of an American Flag on the ladder truck by the San Marcos Fire Department.
