Larry Flint

July 7, 1942 - May 18, 2026

Larry, of Richland, Washington, passed away at the age of 83 after a brief illness. He was born in Glendale into a family of strong character. His early years shaped his independence and ignited a lifelong love of travel, nature, animals, and adventure.

Larry's diverse and adventurous career began with three summers in the US Forest Service, which included serving as a smokejumper out of Winthrop, Washington. He then served for five years in the US Army, including a tour of duty in Vietnam. Larry later spent nine years with the US Antarctic Program, where he completed a notable winter-over at McMurdo Station. In 1981, he moved to Richland and dedicated 16 years to Energy Northwest as a Materials Manager, followed by 12 years traveling as a business systems consultant.

While on temporary duty with the Army in Fukuoka, Japan, Larry met the love of his life, Junko Morita. After sharing an eight-year courtship as pen pals, Junko moved to California, and the couple married in 1973. Together, they raised two daughters, Lisa and Emily. Larry filled his home with the same love and respect he was raised with, leaving his family with a solid example of what it means to live a good, meaningful life. A devoted family man of quiet strength, he served as a steadfast anchor for his children, grandsons, nieces, nephews, and family friends.

Over his lifetime, Larry traveled to 38 countries and explored all seven continents. He was happiest outdoors, whether he was backpacking with friends, snow camping with his dogs, mountain climbing, biking, motorcycling, scuba diving, kayaking, or taking road trips in his custom-built van. Whether conquering a strenuous mountain peak or reading a book on a quiet beach, he always found peace in nature. In later years, he graduated to a more comfortable life on the road with a travel trailer and enjoyed exploring the seas on cruise vessels. Decades of family reunions and holidays spent across the Western states and Pacific Northwest left his loved ones with unforgettable memories.

In retirement, Larry channeled his energy into genealogy research and civic engagement through the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR). His meticulous research not only built a vast Flint family tree but also brought his ancestors to life through the stories he uncovered. Through SAR, he was actively involved in school presentations, new citizenship ceremonies, and events honoring military veterans. All who knew him will miss his stories and his adventurous, principled, and steady presence.

Larry is survived by his daughters, Lisa Flint (Darren Bisset) and Emily Flint; two grandsons; his siblings, Stephanie Flint Brown '54, Marilyn Flint, and Greg Flint '65. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, Junko Flint and his parents.
