Miss Hayslip was a marvelous teacher for me. She gained my respect early on and I did my best work in English in her class.

When I got to talking out of turn, sitting in the back of the room, she told me I was not getting the education I needed and also disturbing the class. She offered to transfer me out if I didn't want to pay attention. I wanted to stay and we reached an agreement that I would change desks and sit in the front row and pay attention, or else I would leave. I stayed and was glad always for that.

She was a real person, not just a lecturer and task assigner. I am still grateful.
