Wallace 'Wally' Giles - Class Of 1941

Wallace 'Wally' Giles

Wallace (Wally) Giles was born July 17, 1923, and passed away February 23, 2007.  Wally was a man of integrity, faith, and humor.  He inspired many with his leadership and his wisdom.

Born in Pasadena, CA., son of Minton Eldredge and Sara Wolcott Giles, Wally attended high school in South Pasadena, where he gained an interest in accounting, serving as Auditor and Commissioner of Finance for the student body while also working part-time for his uncle, a CPA.  Wally graduated with honors from UCLA with a BS in Industrial Management, specializing in Accounting.  He served with the US Navy Supply Corps as Lt.jg in the Pacific theater during WW II, after which he completed his MBA at Harvard in 1947.  Wally married Marjorie H. Irvine in 1958 after a determined, long distance courtship across two continents.

Wally had a distinguished career as an Accounting Partner with Price-Waterhouse (PW), first joining the Los Angeles office in 1949 as a junior accountant.  His job included an assignment in Rio de Janeiro in 1954.  In 1961, Wally was admitted to partnership with PW and transferred to New Orleans as Partner-in-Charge for 17 years.  In 1979 he moved to PW's San Francisco office and served as Administrative Partner until his retirement in 1984.  Following his retirement, Wally served for six years as financial administrator at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church.

Wally had a strong faith in the Lord Jesus, loved his family dearly, and was a mentor for younger men.  He pursued his love of travel and photography, and served in many organizations, including Children's Health Council, Bible Study Fellowship, South Bay Songwriters Association, as Elder and Deacon in the New Orleans Presbyterian Church, and as President of the Louisiana CPA Society, and Harvard Business School Association of Northern California.

He is survived by his beloved and devoted wife Marjorie Irvine Giles of Portola Valley; daughter Nancy Giles Phillips and her husband Donald of Los Altos, daughter Shirley Giles Davis and her husband Robert of Boulder, CO; son Ron Giles and his wife Amanda of Mountain View; grandchildren Matthew and Michelle Phillips, Grace and Allie Davis, and Ethan, Elaine, and Laurel Giles; brothers Robert Giles of White Bear Lake, MN and Paul Giles of Brentwood, CA., and sister Suzanne Giles Melin '47 of Irvine, CA.
