Derek Hambly

Derek Hambly, former superintendent of Bent's Old Fort NHS, Capitol Reef National Park, and Fort Davis NHS, died March 10, 1993 in Lubbock, Texas. Hambly had been hospitalized for several weeks after suffering a series of heart attacks. He was 62.

Derek, born June 22, 1930 in Houston and had lived in Alpine, Texas for the past seven years. He was a veteran of the Korean War and member of the Catholic Church and was a former member of the Lions Club, the AARP, and the Retired Federal Employees Union. He had run the Sun Runners Tours in Alpine for the past several years.

He married the former Agnes Kurtnaker in 1951 in Monrovia, California. Survivors include his wife, Agnes of Alpine; two daughters, Karen Thetford of Lubbock and Kathleen, who is a ranger at Big Bend National Park; and two grandchildren.
