Winifred, born August 21, 1916, was living on Balboa Island when she died on May 5, 2012 at age 95.  She is survived by her son Gary Smith; daughter Susan Allred; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Winifred graduated from Scripps College in Claremont and was an accomplished musician on the cello, playing with the Pasadena Symphony Orchestra, the Santa Monica Symphony, and the UCI orchestra.  She married Robert Beaton Smith in 1940 and they were married for almost 70 years.

Winifred was an active philanthropist. The Winifred Smith Concert Hall on the UCI campus is named in her honor. She was a sports enthusiast, including ocean racing with her husband in their 40 ft Owens Cutter sailboat.
