James W 'Jim' Mercer - Class Of 1953

James W 'Jim' Mercer

Jim Mercer

September 26, 1935 - July 19, 2021

Jim passed away at age 85 in San Clemente where he had resided for the past 35 years. He is survived by his children:  Shelli, Jeff, and Lynne; five grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Jim was very interested and active in sports from grammar school through high school. His favorites were football, basketball and baseball and he was an ALL CIF football player in 1952. He was our point guard in basketball and catcher on the baseball team. After high school he played on the Pasadena City College football team. In later years he became an accomplished golfer. For about 30 years, Jim organized an annual one week golf trip to St George, Utah for his Orange County club. About 55 members traveled and they had a great time every year.

Professionally, Jim spent 22 years with IBM, mostly in their downtown office. He later resigned and formed a successful supermarket maintenance company. His key account was Albertsons Markets. His firm maintained about 125 retail outlets for Albertsons and employed about 175 people in Southern California from San Diego to Santa Barbara.

In later years Jim would gather together members of the football team and other school friends for a day at the races in Del Mar or at Santa Anita. Jim would also gather this same group for lunches or dinner during the year - he always kept in contact with his school friends.

Jim, There are those of us who believe in the pearly gates and those of us not quite so sure, but one thing is a certainty.  Should such a benevolent apurture exist, you are absoulutly one of the most qualified to gain easy passage.  Enjoy your wings.

Tony
