Patricia E 'Patty' McWayne - Class Of 1964

Patricia E 'Patty' McWayne

Patty McWayne

June 29, 1946 - July 19, 2022

At the age of six months, Patty moved to Tokyo, Japan with her parents and older sister Robynne (Wendy). Patty's father was an importer/exporter there. The little girls were surrounded by loving Japanese caretakers who taught them Japanese. Four years later, the family returned to South Pasadena. Although Patty understood English, she spoke only Japanese. She went to Pacific Oaks Nursery School, and then Marengo School. The family briefly moved to Hastings Ranch. Tragically one night, their house caught on fire, and Patty's mother died of smoke inhalation. Patty and Robynne were saved by some teenagers who happened on the scene in time to break out some windows and pull the girls out. After that, Patty and Robynne went back to South Pasadena to live with their grandparents on Bushnell Avenue. Patty resumed school at Marengo, then went on to Junior High and High School, graduating in 1964. Patty went to college at California Western University in San Diego where she met and married her husband. She gave birth to a daughter, Carrie Ann. They all moved to Portland, Oregon which became Patty's permanent home (she loved Portland). After divorcing, she raised her daughter while working and completing her education.

Patty had a long career at the Oregon Board of Trade, eventually becoming Chief of the Foreign Desk. She passed away in July 2022 after a long ordeal with cancer. She was a warm and loving friend with a sometimes twisted sense of humor, a wicked laugh, a beautiful smile, and a twinkle in her eye. Patty had many loves and interests including her cats, art, ecology, gardening, Buddhist philosophy, reading, movies, and spending time with her friends. She is survived by her daughter Carrie, her sister Robynne McWayne '60, her nieces and a nephew, and tons of good friends who will miss her terribly.
